The French-facing mountains

  • North corridor of Petit Arbizon (2,700m)

A hidden passage in the north slope of Arbizon, which allows you to arrive on the ridge between the Petit and Grand Arbizon. Good downhill skiing on snow that rarely sees the sun.

Level: Off-trail, pasture then rock or snow corridor depending on the season.

Elevation Gain: 1200m in summer (hiking), 1500m in winter (ski + crampons) Departure: Hourquette d’Ancizan (summer), Hourquette d’Ancizan road (winter)


  • Arbizon via Montfaucon Peak (2,900m)

A long foot journey, from Payolle pastures to the high mountains. “Arbizon” landscape with views of the plain and the highest peaks.

Level: Trail not always marked, steep scree, little water, long.

Elevation Gain: 1400m in summer (hiking), 1700m in winter (ski + crampons) Departure: Camoudiet Cabins (summer), Payolle road to Ancizan (winter)


  • The Bassia Signal (1,900m)

Family walk on the first “mountain” at the entrance of the valley. Impressive views of the Pic du Midi, Arbizon, and the plain.

Level: Marked but not well-marked trail.

Elevation Gain: 500m in summer (hiking)

Departure: Col de Beyrède (above Sarrancolin)


  • The Bastanet Refuge (2,200m)

Family walk or snowshoe hike around the lakes and amidst the pine martens.

Level: Trail marked in summer, sometimes traced in winter.

Elevation Gain: 650m in summer (hiking), 400m in winter (ski, snowshoes)

Departure: Lakes Road (summer), L’Oule Télésiège (winter)

 

Skiing in the Pichaley corridors and rest of the warrior around the fireplace of the refuge

Level: Experienced off-piste skier and +

Elevation Gain: Max 400m run (ski + crampons)

Departure: Glacier Ski Lift summit


  • The Pichaley (2,600m)

A short hike to an exceptional viewpoint. South-east ridge quite exposed.

Level: Trail in summer. Visible in winter.

Elevation Gain: 450m in summer (hiking), 150m in winter (ski, crampons)

Departure: Portet Col (summer), Glacier Téléski (winter). From the Pichalet summit you can descend to the Bastanet Refuge via the Bastan col on the north ridge, then join the GR10 to return to Portet Col. This longer and more delicate circuit is for hikers comfortable with the terrain.
